OREKAN, which means “in balance” in Basque, is a sculptural series representing the figure of a person standing on a single limb. The work draws its strength from the idea of balance, both formally and technically.

The piece presents the human figure reduced to its essential elements: torso and limbs. Its composition creates a sense of controlled tension, as the entire volume rests on a single point of support. This solution adds considerable complexity to the execution and makes balance the central element through which the work is understood.

The sculpture is composed of two pieces. The first corresponds to the body, where the human presence is identified through a synthetic and expressive structure. The second represents the end of the supporting limb, incorporating voids that reinforce the visual tension and emphasise the relationship between mass, space and stability.

The OREKAN series is developed through different versions and materials. OREKAN I is the original piece, the foundational work from which the entire series emerges. Made in concrete using formwork techniques, it establishes the essential shape of the figure and defines the formal language of the project.

OREKAN II retains the structure and concept of OREKAN I, while introducing a new reading through volume. In this version, certain areas are widened while others are narrowed, creating a play of proportions that adds a new formal tension to the figure’s balance. The work not only stands on a single point of support, but also explores how variations in volume alter the perception of weight, stability and movement.

OREKAN Bronze was produced in the foundry of the Escola Llotja in Barcelona. Cast in bronze, the piece was developed through a moulding process associated with the traditional lost-wax technique, one of the most historically significant methods in sculpture. In this version, the material gives the work a more noble and enduring presence, reinforcing its artistic dimension.

The series is completed by a limited edition of three small-format pieces made in oxidised Corten steel. These works translate the original concept into a more intimate scale, while preserving the formal strength of the figure and the prominence of balance as the central axis of the work.

Designed and executed between November 2016 and March 2017 at the Escola Llotja in Barcelona, OREKAN originated as a final sculpture project. Beyond its academic origins, however, the work stands out for its formal clarity, technical rigour and ability to synthesise, in an essential image, the relationship between body, matter and balance.
